Why play in the World Amateur?

November 30th, 2009

Many of you are thinking of why should you play in the World Amateur Chess Championship. Here are a few pieces of information for you to think about:

  • How often does the US get the chance to host a World Chess Championship?
  • How often do you get the chance to play in a World Chess Championships?
  • How often do you get the chance to play in an event where ALL of the prize money goes to the U2000 crowd of players?
  • How often do you get the chance to earn your FIDE Master title by winning an event?
  • How often do you get a chance to be part of chess history?

I do want to place some emphasis on point #3 regarding the prize fund. Typically in many open tournaments that are class based, a healthy majority of the prize fund goes to those rated above 2000 – anywhere from 35-40% (yes you can verify this yourself!). In the case of the World Amateur Chess Championship, ALL of the prize money goes to the group of chess players that is the backbone of organized chess – the typical chess player under 2000!

As it stands now the prize fund is guaranteed at $20,000 however if we meet our goals as mentioned elsewhere, we are looking at increasing the prize fund another $10,000 to $20,000!

Something for you to think about……

FIDE forfeit rules to be enforced

November 29th, 2009

Please let it be known to all participants of the World Amateur Chess Championship and the Intercontinental School Team Championship that players will be forfeited for not being present at the playing board at the start of the round.

This rule will be new for those players not accustom to participating in FIDE events as non-FIDE events generally provide 30-60 minutes prior to the forfeit. However given that these are FIDE events, and World / Intercontinental Championships, these rules are in play and will be strictly enforced.

Additional the cell phone forfeit rule is in play and enforced as well. Should your mobile device create any audible sound, you will immediately be forfeited from your game.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us and also please check our FAQ page for answers to commonly asked questions.

World Championship Chess Coming to Chicago’s North Shore!

July 16th, 2009

Dr. Korenman and I are pleased to announce that the we have been awarded the rights to organize the 2010 Intercontinental School Team Chess Championship and the 2010 World Amateur Chess Championship respectively.

This is a historic time as the United States has not played host to a World Chess Championship since 1995 and the Chicago North Shore, while having hosted national chess championships, has never held a World Chess Championship.

In the coming weeks we will announce more information on these two fantastic events.

If anyone has questions please feel free to reach out to us at the email addresses shown on the Contact Us page.

Welcome

May 19th, 2009

Welcome to the website for the 2010 World Amateur and World School Team Championships.

For the first time in a decade, the United States is being considered to host not 1 but 2, FIDE World Chess Championship events.

The last time a FIDE World Chess Championship was held in the United States was in 1999 in Las Vegas – the FIDE World Championship (Knockout).

The bids that have been submitted have the authorization and support of the Internation Chess School Union, the US Chess Federation, and the Illinois Chess Association, along with a letter of support from the Mayor of the host city - Skokie, IL. The venue in the bid is the Holiday Inn North Shore Hotel, site of the North American FIDE Invitational tournament series and the 2008 & 2009 US G/60 and US G/30 National Chess Championships.

Over the course of the coming days and weeks we will announce further information on this event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the organizers.
